Copper Sheet Buying Guide

By Daniel Kitts We are going to cover some rather technical terms like: alloy, temper, hardness, gauge and finish. Please stick with me through this brief article and you will really know what kind of copper you need for your application. Alloy. Copper sheet, foil, bar, rod and tube is available in many different alloys. These different alloys give certain physical properties to copper it doesnt usually have, but those new properties often bring new limitations as well. What makes the alloy discussion a little easier is that 99% of the copper sold in the United States is represented by the three alloys listed below. Most of the copper sold today in the United States is alloy C11000, also known as Electrolytic-Tough-Pitch. Plain and simply, C11000 is 99.9% pure copper. It is an excellent electrical conductor, makes a fine looking kick plate on your front door, does a great job as a back splash in your kitchen, makes a very classy looking rain gutter and adorns some of the finest looking roofs in the world. Copper used for tube and pipe is usually alloy C12200. You get this alloy by adding a very small amount of phosphorus to pure copper. This makes the copper easier to weld and braze. Unfortunately, it also makes the copper considerably less conductive. Generally speaking, you rarely see this alloy being used for electrical applications, but if you need to weld or braze, this alloy is your best option. If you are going to turn or machine copper, C14500 is your alloy. If copper is alloyed with a small amount of tellurium it greatly improves the ability of copper to make chips. Pure copper (alloy C11000) tends to be gummy (I apologize for using such a technical term) when machining. This gumminess means you have to slow the machining process down quite a bit. Pure copper is also hard on machine tools, which adds to the expense of machining. C14500 is not quite as conductive as pure copper, but it is relatively close. An interesting fact about copper alloys, if you add a little zinc to the metal - you get brass. Temper. Basically, the Temper of a metal refers to its hardness. The two extremes of Temper are denoted as hard and soft. While the Copper Development Association has installed a numbering convention H01(soft) to H04(hard), most people in the industry simply refer to the degree of hardness. Hey, Ill take some quarter-hard copper sheet, is really all you have to say to your local copper mill* to call out the Temper. So, why does anybody even worry about Temper? To a large degree, the hardness of the metal determines the application. If you were to make a beautiful pot rack out of soft Temper copper bars and chose to hang your grandmothers favorite cast iron frying pan on your new creation, the weight of the frying pan could well deform the rack. Bottom line, if your copper project involves supporting any kind of weight, stick to harder Tempers. On the other hand, if you are interested in making a copper etching or simply forming the copper by hand, you would be much better off with a softer Temper. Softer Tempers are also easier to cut as well. For decorative and craft applications that do not require supporting much weight, soft Temper should be your choice. One final point about Temper, because of the end use of the product, copper bar is generally available only in the harder Tempers and copper sheet in softer Tempers. This has to do with how the two different forms of the metal are used. Gauge, Oz. and Inches. Calling out the gauge of the metal is another way of saying the thickness. It is important to keep in mind that with gauge, the larger the number the thinner the material. 30 gauge copper sheet is much thinner than 16 gauge. To make matters even more confusing, the roofing industry measure copper thickness in ounces per square foot! 16 oz copper sheet is a very common size of roofing copper. Finish. If you have ever walked in the lower level of a fancy department store and happened to see the gorgeous copper pots hanging in the kitchen department, you have seen an unnatural copper finish. Unless copper is treated with a synthetic lacquer, it will not have that deep mirror like finish. Also, if that lacquer finish should ever crack (even a very small one) and air reaches the copper, it will discolor fairly rapidly. Generally, the finish of copper bar and sheet will provide a dull reflection. Occasionally, the metal will also have a slight waviness to it, although it will be very smooth. Over time the metal will darken with exposure to air. The oxygen in the air is actually corroding the metal. Over a number of years a greenish patina will form on the metal. Most people find the character gained by copper through this corrosion process to be quite attractive. As a matter of fact, you can actually purchase copper that has been treated with chemicals which greatly accelerate the corrosion process. If you want that greenish finish on that copper bay window roof right away, not a problem, chemical engineering has provided the product for you. If you would prefer more of a grayish patina, thats available as well. Congratulations, you now know the important factors in specifying copper bar and sheet. Good luck with your project! *I am being sarcastic about your local copper mill. There are only two full line copper mills in the US. If you want to go direct to the source, bring your check book. The minimum order is at least 5,000 lbs. Road Accident Compensation

By Julian Hall Before making a road accident compensation claim, there are special issues which may affect liability. Council Immunity: This states that a victims injury may limit an injury victim’s ability to sue when the driver of the vehicle that causes an accident is a council employee who is working at the time of the accident, or where the accident involves a council-owned vehicle in view of a road accident compensation claim. Owner Liability: This states that even if a vehicle is borrowed to a third party, if an accident ensues, the owner may be jointly liable for damages caused by the third parties fault. Company / Employer Liability: This states that here an employee is driving a vehicle “on the job”, or within the course and scope of employment, the employer can be jointly liable for injuries caused by the employee’s negligent driving conduct. Mobile Phone Usage: Mobile phone usage whilst driving is banned in the UK. Employers may want to consider the following best practice guidelines. Mobile phones should be switched to voicemail when the user is driving. Emergency calls only should be made / received when on the move Employees should be encouraged to only make or receive calls - even with a hands-free kit when they are safely parked away from the road. Any accident caused in this way will affect any road accident compensation claim . Insurance Cover The insurance problems car accident victims have with insurance coverage typically fall into three categories: Uninsured Driver - Unfortunately there are a growing number of people who are driving without any car insurance, an MOT and in some cases a driving license. In the UK, there is an organisation called the MIB (no they dont wear black suits) which stands for the Motor Insurers Bureau who deal with paying out claims against uninsured drivers. This was set up to offer victims of uninsured drivers a way to gain a Aroad accident compensation claim that could then be reclaimed from the uninsured. Underinsured Driver - Underinsured Motorist coverage is the term used when the other vehicle’s policy limit is inadequate to pay for all your damages. Provided you have a Standard Policy, your own insurance company may pay for damages to your vehicle caused by; any person or organization who did not have liability insurance at the time of the accident. Any person or organization who had adequate liability insurance coverage at the time of the accident, but for some reason, the company writing the insurance denies that their policy provides coverage for the loss. Any person or organization who did not carry enough insurance to pay for your damages in full. If you only have a Basic Policy, you do not have any protection if your vehicle is damaged by either an uninsured or underinsured driver. Insurance Company Bad Faith - Anxiety and distress are natural emotions caused when an insurance company refuses to pay. In many circumstances there may be a legitimate reason for the insurer not paying, but there have also been a number of cases where the insurance companys refusal has been considered unreasonable, unfair and in ‘bad faith’. In legal terms, the insurance company has acted in breach of contract. **************************************************************** If you need advice or would just like to speak to someone, please dont hesitate to give Claims Master Group a call on 08000 71 22 71. Encouragement

By Katheryn Hoban Everyone needs encouragement. So many people in this world feel discouraged, pressed in, cornered, unworthy, unlovable, or completely overwhelmed by the circumstances of their lives. You can make a difference in one moment if you will honestly and sincerely encourage them. Let them know that they are capable, that they can do the task before them. Adults, children and senior citizens all need to be encouraged. One way to do this is to talk with them, give them a clear picture of how you see them doing something well. Give them your vision when they dont have their own. Be gentle. Encourage one moment and empathize the next. Let them talk about their dreams and how they used to be or in moments when they felt strong. Sometimes it is necessary to be firm or decisive about the positive picture that you hold of them. Dont waver in your thoughts, be sure that they will be able to do what they want and do it well. Encourage them to do it one step at a time. Praise these little accomplishments. Encourage them to something a little more challenging. Keep recalling that vision of strength for them. Encourage the positive in them; dont let them have a self-pity party. People may not know what they want to do, and it is not your job to tell them what they should do. But you can encourage them towards what they like to do, what makes them joyful, what makes them feel strong and empowered. You can encourage them to make choices that feel better for them. You can encourage anyone exactly where you are. If you are in school, or if you are working, find the positive right there. Sometimes a smile is all it takes. If they are feeling down, a hug can do wonders to make someone feel worthy or lovable. You can encourage with your words and your thoughts, by listening, by being a sounding board, by leading them with your own actions or way of being. When you need to be encouraged, come to me, or go to another person who can offer encouragement to you. Dont go to anyone whom you know will condemn your actions or judge you. Go to the people with vision and strength of their own who are making some positive impact. Every creature on this planet can be and needs to be encouraged at one time or another. Be that person who encourages others. Encourage with kindness, with love, by examples, with praise, with your words. It is as simple as saying You can do this. To encourage is one of the greatest things that you can do for someone. This doesnt mean that you do their work for them. For anyone to become everything for which they are capable they have to do it. They have the opportunity to embrace a new choice, a new way of being, and they have to walk through it. You can be with them every step of the way. You can uplift and strengthen by your words of encouragement. Also remember to encourage yourself. I know you can do this. Come on now, you can do this. One step out is all it takes to transform a situation, or yourself. Step after step consistently will bring you into a new place. Only you or I can take that first step, and the second and the third. Sometimes you are the only person with words of encouragement for someone who is doing something outstanding or great. Great teachers or mentors need encouragement too; they can doubt themselves sometimes. They wonder if they are making the difference, or if they are doing enough. Its not easy being the odd man out or to stand up and have convictions about something when everyone else is going along with the crowd. If you dont have any words to say, a touch on the arm or shoulder, a pat on the back, a smile, or a spontaneous gift can go a long way. Find ways to encourage someone. Do so sincerely. Receive encouragement yourself. Be open to moments when you can impact someones life in a positive and gentle manner, or a profound way. I encourage you, my daughter, to embrace your life, and reach every height that you can! YOU CAN DO IT!! Yoga Kat–aka Katheryn Hoban is a yoga teacher with twelve years experience. Aloe Vera

By Jacob Wood Native to Africa, Aloe Vera is also known as “lily of the desert”, the “plant of immortality”, and the “medicine plant”. The name was derived from the Arabic alloeh meaning “bitter” because of the bitter liquid found in the leaves. Recorded use of Aloe Vera in treating burns, infections and parasites goes back as far as the Egyptians in about 1500 B.C. There are over 500 species of aloe growing worldwide. Ancient Greeks, Arabs and Spaniards have used the plant throughout the millennia. African hunters still rub the gel on their bodies as a deodorant/anti-perspirant. Advance Research of Aloe Vera Extensive research since the 1930’s has shown the clear gel produces dramatic benefits by putting up a protective layer over affected areas, speeding up the healing rate. The root of the aloe plant has also been used as a treatment for colic. As a food supplement, Aloe Vera is said to facilitate digestion, aid in blood and lymphatic circulation, and enhance the function of the liver, kidneys and gall bladder. Liquid health treatments using Aloe Vera and other herbs have proven beneficial for the relief of colitis and peptic ulcers. The oral administration of an extract of Aloe Vera for 6 months produced good results in the treatment of asthma. The exception was the fact that the extract was not effective in patients dependent on corticosteroids. The results of experimental studies in rats and mice suggest that Aloe Vera may be effective, both topically and internally, in the treatment of diabetic leg ulcers, as well as exhibiting blood sugar-lowering effect in both normal and chemical induced diabetic mice. Aloe Vera has shown great promise as an anti-bacterial and anti-viral substance. Acemannan, present in Aloe Vera , has shown encouraging results in the early treatment of the AIDS virus. Uses of Aloe Vera Aloe Vera is used today for the treatment the same conditions it has traditionally been used for. Those conditions include constipation as well as minor cuts and burns. In India, Aloe Vera was also used as a remedy for intestinal infections and suppressed menses.Aloe Vera is remedy for; Wounds, Ulcers, Burns, Asthma, Diabetes. Aloe Vera Include: The aloe vera plant is about 96% water. The rest of it contains active ingredients, such as essential oil, amino acids, minerals, vitamins, enzymes and glycoproteins. The constituents that produce the cathartic laxative effects of aloe latex are known as anthraquinone glycosides. Aloe Vera contains at least three anti-inflammatory fatty acids that are helpful for the stomach, small intestine and colon. Aloe Vera naturally alkalizes digestive juices to prevent over acidity - a common cause of indigestion. Acemannan is a newly discovered compound in aloe vera, which is being studied for its ability to strengthen the body’s natural resistance. Results have indicated acemannan can boost the immune system. Life - The Essence of Mind

By Teow Aun Chew Over a period of 5,000 years, through the lineage of Tao, there are 64 Patriarchs and one of them is Hui Neng. On the Essence of Mind, he said that it is pure by nature and it is the seed of enlightenment. By making use of this mind alone we can reach Sainthood directly and one of his saying is “Sentient beings who sow the seeds of enlightenment; in the field of Causation will reap the fruit of Sainthood. Inanimate objects void of Godly-nature; sow not and reap not.” This is one of Hui Neng’s beautiful stanzas (teachings): “A master of the Buddhist Canon as well as of the teaching of the Dhyana School, may be likened unto the blazing sun sitting high in his meridian tower. Such a man would teach nothing but the Dharma for realizing the Essence of Mind. And his object in coming to this world would be to vanquish the heretical sects. We can hardly classify the Dharmas into ‘Sudden’ and ‘Gradual’ but some men will attain enlightenment much quicker than others. For example, this system for realizing the Essence of Mind, is above the comprehension of the ignorant. We may explain it in ten thousand ways, but all those explanations may be traced back to one principle. To illumine our gloomy tabernacle, which is stained by defilement, we should constantly set up the Light of Wisdom. Erroneous views keep us in defilement, while right views remove us from it, but when we are in a position to discard both of them, we are then absolutely pure. Bodhi is immanent in our Essence of Mind and attempt to look for it elsewhere is erroneous. Within our impure mind the pure one is to be found, and once our mind is set right, we are free from the three kinds of beclouding (defilement, evil karma, and expiation in evil realms of existence). If we are treading the Path of Enlightenment, we need not be worried by stumbling-blocks, provided we keep a constant eye on our own faults. We cannot go astray from the right path. Since every species of life has its own way of salvation, they will not interfere with or be antagonistic to one another. But if we leave our own path and seek some other way of salvation, we shall not find it, and though we plod on till death overtakes us, we shall find only penitence in the end. If you wish to find the true way, right action will lead you to it directly; but if you do not strive for Buddhahood, you will grope in the dark and never find it. He who treads the Path in earnest, sees not the mistakes of the world. If we find fault with others, we ourselves are also in the wrong. When other people are in the wrong, we should ignore it, for it is wrong for us to find fault. By getting rid of the habit of fault-finding, we cut off a source of defilement. When neither hatred nor love disturb our mind, serenely we sleep. Those who intend to be the teachers of others, should themselves be skilled in the various expedients which lead others to enlightenment. When the disciple is free from all doubts, it indicates that his Essence of Mind has been found. The Kingdom of Buddha is in this world, within which enlightenment is to be sought. To seek enlightenment by separating from this world, is as absurd as to search for a rabit’s horn. Right views are called ‘transcendental’; erroneous views are called ‘worldly.’ When all views, right or erroneous, are discarded, then the essence of Bodhi appears. This stanza is for the ‘Sudden’ School. It is also called the ‘Big Ship of Dharma’ (for sailing across the ocean of existence). Kalpa after kalpa, a man may be under delusion, but once enlightened, it takes him only a moment to attain Buddhahood.” In the practice of Tao of Heaven, Hui Neng is one of my spiritual teachers. He is the reincarnation of Bodhisattva Ti-Tsang, also known as The Holy Teacher of the Underworld or Bodhisattva Ksitigarbha. Author: T.A Chew Website: http://www.white-sun.com T.A Chew, an accountant by profession, years ago after a very bright flash of light, saw a holy being from the underworld and then realized that there are holy beings too in the underworld. The teaching of the Essence of Mind in the spiritual sense was taught by Hui Neng, the reincarnation of Ti-Tsang Wang Pusa in Chinese. 5 Breakthrough Talking Tips for Women in the Job Market!

By Paul Megan To level the job search playing field women learn to express themselves assertively in their business relationships. This is especially true when they are in the job market. Its all part of strategizing a successful job campaign in advance of sitting down with a prospective employer. As EEI points out in its innovative job search system, nothing will happen to further your career unless and until you meet face-to-face with a decision-maker. EEI, a pioneer in alternative job search strategies, recommends that you dump the idea of interviewing in favor of establishing rapport and chemistry with an employer through a carefully scripted dialogue. In other words, if you arent speaking at least 50% of the time youre in front of your next employer, youre missing an opportunity to reveal how you solve problems, think creatively, and present the contributions you can make going forward. A noted career coach, Molly Dickinson Shepard, points out that men get more than their share of money and power in the American workplace. She advises women to step up to the competitive plate by excelling in communication . . . gaining an advantage by practicing talking tips: 1. Speak up in business meetings. Dont wait too long to present a decisive, briefly worded opinion. 2. Stick to the big picture. Details are what make men think they ramble. 3. State your point briefly–and then stop talking. Silence gives others a chance to digest what you say, and respond intelligently. 4. Dont sit where the boss cant see you. If the room is crowded, stand up so you can be heard. 5. Assertive speech is good, aggressive is bad. Shepards tips are aimed at women in business meetings while on the job. But , according to EEI, her informative approach applies equally to women who are engaging a prospective employer before a job comes along. In both cases your success will not depend on what you used to do, but on how well you can communicate who you are and what you can do going forward. Paul Megan writes for EEI, the world class leader in alternative job search strategies and non-traditional career advancement since 1985. Are You Inspired In Your Work

By CD Mohatta Why do we all work? If it is for money, then does it mean that those who earn enough to last a life time or those who inherit, should do no work? Try to find out around with your friends about why they work and surely few of them will answer - for money. If someone who has enough money decides to do no work, will it make that person happy and contented? We derive satisfaction in life by doing things that we feel are worth while. If we are sure that we have done good work, we feel peace in the heart. It gives us the approval of our ability. Let us find out if we are inspired in and with our work. How to know if we are inspired in what we do? The first question should be - are we made for that work? Does that work fit our abilities and mental makeup? If yes, the first barrier to inspiration in work is broken. For example a person with weak physique will find the work of a sailor very unsuitable. What about enjoyment? Do you enjoy doing your work? Are you happy at the end of the day or tired and irritated? If you enjoy doing your work, no amount of hard work will tire you out totally. Otherwise your inner frustration of doing something that you don’t like doing will tire you out with anger in no time. Do you feel that your work makes other lives better? If some how you can begin getting that feeling, your inspiration in work will rise without any other help. Think of a person, who made a bed especially for a sick person. During a visit to the sick person, the maker is told that the bed has made life much better and how much the patient loves the bed and thanks the maker for that. The person who made that bed will feel extremely satisfied with his/her work after this session. Unfortunately, most of the customer interaction are handled by the marketing department now a days and the people who work to make the product, don’t come in touch with the users. We all feel very satisfied if we feel that our work has made someone feel better. If the marketing person who makes good sales is thanked by the shareholders of the company for multiplying their investment, he/she will be equally happy. the point is - we feel satisfied and inspired if we give joy to other with our work. The last test to find out if you are inspired in your work would be to find out if you show creativity in your work? Those who are inspired show creativity in some area of of their work, because they want to improve the work efficiency. Uninspired souls will only wait for the day to get over while inspired ones always feel good and creative doing their work. If you have found a work that inspires you, you are very lucky, otherwise it is time to find your true vocation and get satisfaction. Outdoor Deck Fireplaces

By Josh Riverside In recent times a large number of people have opted to install patio covers over extended areas of their homes, which were otherwise open spaces. This cover can transform these areas into porches and sit outs and provide protection to furniture and other objects that are left outside. To create an authentic porch people often use a wooding flooring system to create a deck that offers a complete look. They are the perfect place for outdoor deck fireplaces during winter to enjoy its warmth out of doors. Outdoor deck fireplaces are available in a range of sizes, styles and price brackets. When considering such purchases it is important to find a product that is made, in accordance with the local laws, related to outdoor air pollution. For this reason outdoor propane and natural gas deck varieties have gained popularity, as they do not emit dense fumes wherein smoke particles remain entrapped in the surrounding air. When buying outdoor fireplaces that need to be placed upon wooden decks, it is advisable to consider its weight and size. This is because a heavy fireplace can cause ample stress on the deck, resulting in breakage and stress cracks. When considering outdoor fireplaces that are to be placed upon wooden decks it is important to take safety into consideration. It is possible to drop cinder on the deck, which can accidentally cause a fire. It is important to follow adequate safety measures when installing these outdoor fireplaces. Manufacturer may offer trays that are to be placed below the fireplace to collect, all burnt particles that fall out of a dying fire. Users may also use special stands that can prevent such accidents from occurring. They also need to be placed appropriately so that smoke and heat emanating from it is not directly exposed to the plants, in and around the porch. They should not be placed in a manner wherein people could bump into them on their way in or out of the house. They are available in a wide range of designs including beautiful ceramic and brick varieties.
